Erdogan in Belgrade: Relations with Serbia are in golden times

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said on Friday in Belgrade that relations between Serbia and Turkey are in "golden times". He made these statements in a joint press conference with the Serbian president, Aleksandër Vucic. Vucic said that the two leaders discussed important geopolitical topics, as well as the problems faced by the two countries.

"Turkey and Serbia have my economic relations. We have tripled the commercial exchange, compared to a few years ago", said Vucic.

The Serbian president has said that an agreement has been reached to improve relations and cooperation in the defense and military industries. Erdogan met with Vucic in Belgrade, as part of his two-day visit to Serbia.

On the day of the arrival of the Turkish president in Serbia, on October 10, the Government of Serbia has approved several memorandums of understanding between Serbia and Turkey, in areas such as employment, social security, economy, industry and technology, media and information, youth and sports, and how to manage emergencies. This is the fourth visit of the Turkish president to Serbia, since 2017.

Before the visit to Belgrade, he was in Tirana, from where he promised Albania the donation of kamikaze drones and participated in the inauguration of a mosque built with funding from Turkey. In Erdogan's preliminary visit to Belgrade in September 2022, Serbia said it wanted to buy Bayraktar drones, but their purchase never materialized.

A protocol was reached in the other world that enabled the citizens of Serbia and Turkey to travel to the two countries only with identity cards. Turkey is fourth in the list of countries from which Serbia imported the most in 2023. Turkish companies are present in Turkey in textile, construction, mechanical industry, banking and tourism. The two countries have good relations, but they disagree on the issue of Kosovo. Ankara recognizes the independence of this country, while Serbia does not./ REL
