Greek Prime Minister Proposes Parliament Speaker as Presidential Candidate

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced his decision to have Konstantinos Tasoulas as the candidate for President of the Republic proposed by the government.

The first vote will be held in Parliament on January 25.

Justifying his decision, the Prime Minister explained that "I decided that in the coming period and in a turbulent international environment, the country needs a President of the Republic with a long public history."

"The President of the Republic must have high prestige, wider acceptance and of course practical experience, knowledge and respect for the institutions. Wider acceptance, however, does not necessarily mean any proposals beyond the current government majority. On the contrary, it signals a person who will inspire trust in society, who will have the ability to unite," the Greek prime minister said.

He stated that the head of state may have limited executive powers, but he is the symbol of the nation.

"Our constitution provides all the guarantees, while history also shows that individuals are the ones who ultimately give value to institutions," said Mitsotakis.
