Sahara dust invades the European sky

Sahara dust invades the European sky

A special phenomenon has occurred in Switzerland, as an extraordinary volume of Saharan dust has invaded the sky in the country. According to a French meteorologist, today alone saw an influx equal to 180,000 tons of dust, a finding gleaned from forecast models.

The meteorologist said that this time has exceeded the previous events which usually spread only half the dust. The dust surge was driven by a powerful southerly current, transporting particles from the Sahara desert in northern Africa into the skies of Switzerland since Friday.

The Sahara is the planet's main source of mineral dust, emitting between 60 and 200 million tons per year. The presence of Saharan dust changes atmospheric dynamics, appearing in a yellow hue across the skies and enhancing the spectacle of sunrises and sunsets.
