The oldest person in the world dies

Tomiko Itooka, declared the world's oldest woman by Guinness World Records, has died at the age of 116.

She died at a nursing home in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

Itooka has been declared the world's oldest woman, after Spaniard Maria Branyas Morera died in August 2024 at the age of 117.

The Japanese woman was born in May 1908 – six years before the start of World War I.

It has experienced world wars, pandemics, and extraordinary technological breakthroughs.

She had two daughters and two sons, according to Guinness, and lived alone in the city of Nara after her husband's death in 1979.

By September 2024, Japan had more than 95,000 residents who were 100 years old or older, and 88 percent of them were women.

With a population of 124 million, almost a third of Japan's population is over 65 years old.

Following Itooka's death, Brazilian nun Canabarro Lucas, who was born 16 days after the Japanese woman and is 116 years old, is now believed to be the oldest person in the world./ REL
