Sailings for the Vlora-Italy ferry line suspended

Sailings for the Vlora-Italy ferry line suspended

The Vlora seaport captaincy has decided to suspend sea navigation for the ferry line with Italy. The ferry will not travel to Brindisi and vice versa until Sunday.

Starting at 19:00 on Thursday evening, this decision was made. A decision made based on the forecast of hydrometeorological conditions which indicated an increase in the speed and intensity of the coastal wind. The strong coastal wind caused a force of 9 in the open sea, but at many hours of the day even higher than that, making it impossible for the ferry to sail with the Italian line.

Meanwhile, sea navigation for small boats and fishing vessels will also be suspended for three days in a row. Starting from the early hours of Thursday morning, fishing vessels and boats will not be allowed to go out to sea. The reason for this measure is the strong coastal wind, with a South-Southeast direction, which causes high waves both in the open sea and in the bay.

The coastal wind in the city of Vlora reaches up to 15 meters per second in the bay and 25 meters per second in the open sea. As a result of this wind, in the open sea the waves reach up to 2.5 meters, while in the bay they reach a height of 1.5 meters, making it impossible for fishing vessels and small floating vessels to sail. The wind is from the South-Southeast, causing sea forces in the bay up to 6 points. Small fishing vessels and floating vessels are not allowed to go out to sea starting from 12:00 noon on Friday and sailing will continue suspended until Sunday.

Fishing and navigation vessel administrators have been notified of the situation and have begun securing their vessels on the coast to avoid collisions, which could cause damage.

The hydrometeorological situation is expected to improve starting from March 16, after 08:00 AM, Sunday, when fishing and floating vessels will be allowed to go out to sea again. At the same time, the ferry line from Brindisi to Vlora will resume sailings to head back towards Italy.

It is worth noting that currently only one of the two such ferry lines operates on the Vlora-Brindisi line, as one remains blocked in Italy for technical reasons.
