New WhatsApp scam, police appeal to citizens: Do not give out the 6-digit code

The State Police have raised the alarm about a fraud scheme that aims to take control of citizens' WhatsApp accounts.

According to the announcement, the perpetrators are using fake messages and links, through which users are asked to enter a 6-digit verification code, enabling the fraudsters to register the account on another device.

The police appeal and ask citizens not to share the verification code and to activate two-step verification as seen in the instructions.

The State Police appeals for caution against attempts to gain access to WhatsApp accounts.

The State Police informs citizens that cases of the circulation of fraudulent messages and links have been identified, which aim to take control of WhatsApp accounts.

Scammers send links with various claims, such as to vote in a contest or to confirm an action. The user is then asked to enter the 6-digit WhatsApp verification code. This code is used by the perpetrators to register the account on another device and take control of it.

The State Police advises citizens:

* Do not click on suspicious links, even if they are sent by known people;

* Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone;

* Activate the Two-Step Verification feature in the WhatsApp application;

* If you suspect your account has been compromised, take immediate action to recover it and notify your contacts.
