Putin: Ukrainian territories could be returned to Poland, Hungary and Romania

Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again made claims about the future of Ukraine's western territories, stating that some of them could end up in the future under the control of countries that, according to him, have historically owned them.

In his statements, Putin referred to the period after World War II, claiming that Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had ceded to Ukraine some territories that had previously been part of Poland, Hungary and Romania.

According to the Russian president, these territorial changes were made at a time when the constituent republics of the Soviet Union were part of the same state. Putin added that Stalin could not have foreseen the current situation and claimed that Ukraine could lose these territories "sooner or later".

"Apparently, Stalin never thought that a situation like today could arise ," Putin said.

The Russian president also repeated the Kremlin's version of the start of the war, denying that Russia was the aggressor and claiming that Moscow was simply responding to Ukraine's actions, supported by the West.

The statements come at a time when the issue of the occupied territories and their status remain among the main obstacles to any diplomatic effort to end the war in Ukraine.
