Scandal with medical student exams, Minister of Education resigns

India's Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, has announced his resignation, following weeks of massive student protests over the scandal of publishing and selling medical school entrance exams.

His departure is seen as a major victory for the youth movement "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP), which has been staging nationwide demonstrations demanding accountability and deep reforms in the exam system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has yet to officially accept the resignation.

Following Pradhan's announcement, the CJP announced that it would end the protests after the government accepted the movement's main demands. These include compensation for the families of students who lost their lives after the cancellation of exam results, and a review of the plan to reform the testing system.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke welcomed the minister's resignation, but stressed that reform of the education system must continue.

Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported Pradhan, calling his resignation an act of responsibility and integrity.

The protests, which began after allegations of leaking medical school entrance exams, were accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and police. The movement quickly turned into a broader youth revolt, demanding more job opportunities, transparency and education reforms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted for the first time this week, declaring that the perpetrators of the scandal have been arrested and that the government will take measures to protect the future of the students.
