Fires near Madrid hit NASA facilities, space communications station evacuated

NASA facilities near Madrid have been affected by fires that have engulfed the outskirts of the Spanish capital, forcing the evacuation of staff as a safety measure.

A spokesman for the US agency confirmed to AFP that the flames "passed through" the Madrid Space Communications Complex (MDSCC), a strategic center that plays a key role in communicating with missions exploring deep space.

According to NASA, the evacuation of the facility was completed on time and no injuries were reported. The agency said that possible damage will be assessed as soon as safety conditions allow.

Spanish authorities and emergency teams continue efforts to bring the fires under control, which have engulfed several areas on the outskirts of Madrid and caused concerns for critical infrastructure.
