Suspect arrested for murder of Italian journalist hiding in abandoned building

Italian police have detained a suspect in the murder of Salerno journalist Luigi “Luca” Esposito, whose half-burnt body was found between the night of July 18 and 19 in a rural area on the outskirts of Eboli.

According to authorities, the suspect is a 26-year-old man of Tunisian origin, who was located overnight in an abandoned building, not far from where the journalist's body was discovered.

The Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command of Salerno managed to identify the suspect by analyzing the security camera footage and comparing it with the mobile phone data collected during the investigation.
According to preliminary investigations, Luigi Esposito was still alive, although in agony from the wounds he suffered, when his body was set on fire.

Forensic examination shows that the journalist was brutally raped, possibly with a hard object. There were serious signs of violence on his face, while the weapon used in the attack and the victim's mobile phone have not yet been found.

The cause of death has been determined to be asphyxiation. Investigators suspect Esposito drowned. Tests also confirmed that he had inhaled smoke, indicating he was still alive when he was engulfed in flames.

Mary Esposito, a friend of the late journalist, said she anxiously awaits the full revelation of the incident.

"I'm anxiously awaiting reliable news. At first you try to react, but now I'm understanding more and more what happened. It's not easy to accept all this."

Luca did not deserve to be treated this way, because of the wonderful man he was. I have faith in the work that prosecutor Cantone is doing. Sooner or later, the truth must come out.
