Dozens of fake profiles, identified by BIRN as having been created in recent months, immediately shared Prime Minister Edi Rama's Friday speech to the Socialist Party parliamentary group, during which he complained, among other things, about the algorithm and foreign influences, which he said fueled and amplified the protest that has been demanding his resignation for over 55 days.

Among the hundreds of people who shared Rama's speech on Facebook, BIRN identified over 25 fake profiles as well as Socialist Party MPs, mayors and administration employees in central and local government.

During his speech, Rama divided the protesters into “flamingos” and “ravens,” while insisting again that the protest was inspired from abroad, through the manipulation of social networks. “The flamingo provided the glamorous symbol, the shadow of the most famous father-in-law in the world provided the global magnet, and the algorithm, which is a master of interference in the affairs of other countries, did the rest,” Rama said.

He also claimed that a massive barrage of fake profiles had been released through the digital cloud, profiles that Rama said "we have identified."

Rama has been complaining for weeks about the social media algorithm and fake accounts of his critics, but BIRN managed to identify that hundreds of fake profiles were also opened in late June by actors supporting the government.

These profiles share posts by the prime minister and his cabinet ministers on social media, while also engaging in coordinated attacks against protest supporters.

BIRN identified over 100 fake Facebook and Instagram profiles, created between June 28-30 and others in July. The majority of them were identified by manually monitoring the prime minister's Facebook posts and the people who shared them.

The profiles do not hide their affiliation, as they mainly use city names and direct links to the Socialist Party as pseudonyms, such as “Edi Rama for Albania 2030”, “kolonjasot2030” or “Bulqiza e së Ardhmes 2030”. Although they have different names, the profiles distribute the same propaganda content.

Thanks to the database, BIRN was able to identify the presence of these fake profiles even in the sharing of the prime minister's latest speech. Among the easily identified profiles are the nicknames "Black Arrow", "Bulqiza qe ecen" or "Flamingot Durres" and a host of others that use people's names, despite the fact that they are not real profiles.
