Rama admits failure in healthcare: Elderly people queue up before sunrise

After about two months of protests against his government, Prime Minister Edi Rama has changed his tone of communication, acknowledging that Albanian citizens can no longer be measured by the standards of a time when a street, a school, or a flower garden were considered a reason for celebration.

In a speech to Socialist MPs and cabinet members, Rama said that Albania has entered a “new era” where public investments are no longer achievements that require applause, but rather minimum expectations of citizens towards the state. According to him, the dissatisfaction expressed in the protests should serve as a signal for change within the majority.

"The closed era is that of absences, when a new school or kindergarten was welcomed with applause. The open era is that of expectations, when achievements are standards, not victories," Rama declared.

The Prime Minister also brought up the problems in healthcare as an example, citing the case of an elderly woman who, according to him, protested due to long waits for medical services. He said that the government must change the way institutions function so that citizens do not face basic shortages in public services.

"An 80-something-year-old grandmother protested because every time she had to go to the polyclinic for a visit, she would get up before dawn to take the line, because the doctor would go to work late and only stay for 2-3 hours. We need to change so that her plight is heard and her experience changes and she understands that the state does not end with the evil bullying of a doctor ," he said.
