"Delirious" according to Rama, inspiration for Europe. How the flamingo became a symbol of protest

While Prime Minister Edi Rama has attacked the protests against his government, calling the protesters with the lowest of epithets such as "charlatans, or delusional," in Europe the same movement has been viewed through a different lens.

In an analysis published by Euractiv , the “Flamingo Revolution” in Albania is interpreted by representatives of the German Greens as a sign of increased civic awareness for nature protection and opposition to interventions in protected areas, writes politiko.al. Sven Giegold, deputy chairman of the German Greens, says that the Albanian protest has impressed him and adds: “ I would like many people in Germany to protest for nature.”

In addition to the political clash within Albania, the Euractiv article brings another reading of the protest, that of an environmental movement that has found its symbol in the Vjosa-Narta flamingo, becoming an issue that is also being discussed on the European stage.

The Greens are following their long-standing tradition of using animals to tell a political story, catching on to the “flamingo revolution” that is gaining momentum in Albania.

Pink birds have become a political symbol in the Balkan country, as protests against a resort project with ties to the Trump family grow in scale.

For the European Greens, who have lost the momentum of the green wave that brought them to power in several European countries in 2019, this could be their moment to return to the stage.

Animals and politics have a long history together. Heraldic creatures like lions and dragons have symbolized the power and majesty of those who wielded them for centuries. During the American Revolution, South Carolina used a venomous snake as a symbol with the message "don't tread on me" to warn the British. Meanwhile, the giant panda has been the symbol of the environmental organization WWF for more than six decades.

But perhaps no one has done this better than the German Greens – a relatively young party with strong roots in the nature protection movement, which subsequently became the leading political force for environmentalism in Europe.

In the beginning it was the frog. An animal unsuited to a world being invaded by cars and dying en masse on the streets. Early Green activists, often identified with Birkenstock sandals, became known for their efforts to save them from being crushed by cars. The unspoken message to voters was: “What we do for frogs, we will do for you.”

Flamingot kundër oligarkëve

“Për shqiptarët, flamingoja është simboli se vendi i tyre nuk është në shitje”, tha Jutta Paulus, eurodeputete e të Gjelbërve, e cila vizitoi protestat kundër një ligji që lejon ndërtimin e resorteve me pesë yje në zona të mbrojtura natyrore si Laguna e Vjosë-Nartës – habitat i flamingove që tashmë është kthyer në simbolin e protestës, aty ku dhëndri i presidentit amerikan Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, kërkon të ndërtojë një resort luksoz.

Me familjen MAGA që po grumbullon miliarda dollarë publikisht përmes bizneseve të saj, zogu i hollë rozë, i cili zakonisht qëndron mbi njërën këmbë në ujërat e cekëta, po shndërrohet në simbol të një beteje të shekullit XXI kundër kapitalizmit grabitqar dhe korrupsionit oligarkik.

“Është sikur flamingot të jenë këtu me ne”
Për të Gjelbrit, të cilët po përballen me rënie në sondazhe dhe kaluan nga vendi i katërt në të gjashtin në Parlamentin Evropian pas humbjes së rreth 20 eurodeputetëve në zgjedhjet e vitit 2024, flamingoja përfaqëson një mundësi të re.

“Kur njerëzit në Shqipëri protestojnë për mbrojtjen e natyrës, është sikur të jenë në rrugë bashkë me ne këtu, dhe anasjelltas”, tha Sven Giegold, zëvendëskryetar i të Gjelbërve gjermanë.

“Do të doja që shumë njerëz në Gjermani të protestonin për natyrën”, shtoi ai.

Giegold, një ish-eurodeputet për shumë vite, hyri në Parlamentin Evropian në vitin 2009 dhe më pas u thirr në Berlin për të punuar me ish-zëvendëkancelarin Robert Habeck në vitin 2022. Ai ka qenë prej kohësh një nga figurat më novatore të lëvizjes së gjelbër dhe bashkëthemelues i degës gjermane të lëvizjes kundër globalizimit Attac në vitin 2000.

Të Gjelbrit fituan mbështetje të gjerë edhe për rolin e tyre në protestat kundër marrëveshjeve të tregtisë së lirë gjatë viteve 2010, ku simbol u bë edhe “pula e klorinuar” – një tjetër kafshë që u përdor në debatet politike.

Kryengritja popullore e flamingove
“Revolucioni shqiptar i flamingove” është bërë tashmë një nga çështjet që e ka përfshirë më shumë Giegold.

“Po, kjo më preku”, tha ai për Euractiv nga rrëzat e Alpeve bavareze. “Njerëzit po dalin në rrugë për të protestuar kundër politikanëve të tyre dhe zgjidhja është Bashkimi Evropian”.

Giegold – i njohur edhe për dashurinë e tij ndaj lodrave prej kafshësh, sipas burimeve brenda partisë – nisi shpejt një linjë lodrash prej pellushi në formën e flamingos, me mbështetjen e të Gjelbërve në Parlamentin Evropian.

Kushdo që kërkon mund të marrë një flamingo prej pellushi falas, ndërsa inkurajohet një dhurim vullnetar për organizatën shqiptare të mbrojtjes së natyrës PNEA.

A mailing list called the "Flamingo Revolution Club" has also been created, notifying supporters of upcoming protest opportunities.

From protest to popular culture
"All citizens are raising their voices against greedy billionaires like Donald Trump and Jared Kushner," say the Greens.

A sign that the protest has now entered popular culture was the reaction of world-famous singer Dua Lipa, whose parents are Albanians from Kosovo. She described the movement as "inspiring."

"What really worries me is the principle that the government can change the law simply to remove environmental protections, without any kind of public consultation," Lipa said on her podcast.

The battle against the weakening of nature protection, combined with the anti-oligarch spirit that the flamingo represents, is also spreading to Europe through the large Albanian diaspora in Germany and Austria.

Could this bird – like the bee or the wolf before it – become the face of a new political movement that the Greens will successfully embrace?

"In Germany you can only see flamingos in zoos," Giegold joked.

At least for now.
