Fires sweep southwest France, over 220,000 people evacuated near Bordeaux

France is facing a serious situation from massive forest fires, as flames in the Gironde region, near the city of Bordeaux, continue to spread rapidly, forcing authorities to undertake mass evacuations.

More than 220,000 residents have fled the danger zones, with 55,000 people evacuated from villages south of Bordeaux overnight. The fire is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from the city's outskirts, but authorities say there is no immediate plan to evacuate Bordeaux.

The situation remains critical in the Gironde region, where the fires have destroyed about 42,000 hectares of forest. Nationally, since the beginning of the year, the fires have engulfed nearly 98,000 hectares of territory, making them among the most severe in France since World War II.

Thousands of forces have been deployed to deal with the emergency. Around 2,500 firefighters, including teams from Switzerland, are battling the flames, while around 1,500 military personnel and over 1,200 police and gendarmerie officers are on the ground for evacuations and security of the affected areas.

Authorities warn that controlling the fire remains difficult due to weather conditions. Captain Nicolas Braz, one of the leaders of the operation, said the fire has created "its own winds", making the movement of the flames unpredictable.
