AGSH condemns violence against journalists during the protest at the Parliament

The Association of Journalists of Albania (AGSH) has reacted to the episode of the physical clash recorded this Monday between police officers and journalists, in the premises near the Parliament.

According to AGSH, from the footage and information collected on the ground, it appears that State Police officers physically assaulted Ora News journalist Edison Vatnikaj while he was filming the escort of a protester.

"The Journalists' Association of Albania strongly condemns the violence exercised by State Police officers against Ora News journalist Edison Vatnikaj. This is a serious and unacceptable act, which constitutes a direct violation of media freedom and the public's right to be informed," the  reaction states.

AGSH emphasizes that journalists have the right and obligation to document events of public interest, without facing violence, intimidation, or obstacles from the authorities.

According to the organization, the incident was not an isolated case. While reporting on the protest, other media teams were also hindered in the exercise of their duties, facing unjustified interference and restrictions from the officers.

 

The statement says that these actions constitute a serious escalation of pressure on the media.

AGSH calls on the Police Supervision Agency (AMP) to launch investigations into the incident and hold the officers involved in the violence against journalists legally accountable.
