Which European country could be hit hardest by Donald Trump's tariffs?

About 20 EU member states exported more to the US than they imported in 2023. According to Eurostat, the EU statistics agency, the country with the largest surplus was Germany, followed by Italy and Ireland. This suggests that if tariffs were imposed in the EU, Germany – the EU’s largest economy – could be hit hardest.

It is known that more than 30% of all EU transatlantic goods exports were from Germany in 2023, writes the BBC.

Most of the exports were cars and machinery. While US President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained about EU car exports to the US, with few vehicles being sent the other way.

Trump believes that by imposing tariffs he can boost the American economy, protect jobs and increase tax revenue.

And it's all part of his America First pledge. But many economists have warned that the tariffs have already hit businesses and consumers on both sides, with goods becoming more expensive.
