The Kremlin confirms the role of Roman Abramovich in the Ukraine-Russia

The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich has taken part in Russian-Ukrainian negotiations, following media reports that Abramovich had emerged as an interlocutor in facilitating possible peace talks.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Abramovich "took part in the negotiations at the initial stage, that's true."

Pushed further, Peskov gave some details, but added: "And now negotiations are continuing between the two negotiating teams - Russian and Ukrainian."

Peskov was responding to a question about an article in The Wall Street Journal where he reported that the Biden administration had suspended sanctions on Abramovich at the instigation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, over the oligarch's role in the possible peace talks.

CNN has not independently confirmed such a discussion between Washington and Kiev and Peskov has not provided any additional information.

The Financial Times has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin has personally endorsed Abramovich's possible role in the talks, citing two unidentified individuals with direct knowledge of the issue. CNN has not independently confirmed that report.

It is unclear what role Abramovich is playing at this stage in possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
