"The missile that fell in Poland was not Ukrainian", Biden contradicts

US President Joe Biden has contradicted Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement that the rocket that fell in Poland and killed two people was not of Ukrainian origin.

Ukraine's president said on Wednesday that he had "no doubt" that the missile was "not Ukrainian" and called on his officials to gain access to the blast site.

Biden has said the trajectory suggests the missile is unlikely to have come from Russia, and when asked Thursday about Zelenskyy's comments on the matter, he told reporters, "That's not proof."

Moscow insists it did not launch the missile, saying: "No strikes on targets near the Ukrainian-Polish state border were carried out by Russian means of destruction."

Ukraine maintains stockpiles of Soviet- and Russian-made weaponry, including air defense missiles, and has also seized many more Russian weapons as it has defeated Kremlin forces during the conflict, now in its ninth month.

The missile explosion in Poland had raised concerns about NATO's Article 5, which means that an attack on one member country is seen as an attack on all allies.

But Polish President Andrzej Duda has said his country is "very likely" to instead invoke Article 4, which allows a member state to raise a security issue and discuss it.

"It is very likely that it was shot down by Ukrainian air defense to protect Ukrainian territory," he said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also spoke about Tuesday's incident and said that whatever the outcome of the investigation into the blast, Russia "bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine."

"This is not Ukraine's fault," he said.
