US forces have carried out strikes against targets linked to a group in Syria that is backed by Iran, the US military said. Meanwhile, a monitoring group said that five fighters were killed by the American attacks.
The strikes were in response to a missile attack on US troops in Syria, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
The strikes targeted "a weapons depot and logistics headquarters... in response to a missile attack on US personnel," CENTCOM said in a social media post, but did not identify the group attacked.
"There was no damage to US buildings and no injuries to US personnel or partner forces during this attack," CENTCOM added.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group that monitors the war in Syria, said that "five pro-Iranian fighters were killed and several others wounded after being hit by US warplanes" at one of their bases in the town of Albukamal, in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor.
On Monday, US forces bombed nine targets linked to Iran-backed groups in response to recent missile and drone strikes, the Pentagon said.
The observer said that these attacks killed four members of groups loyal to Iran.
The US military has close to 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq as part of the international coalition that was formed in 2014 to help fight the extremist group, the Islamic State.
Since the war in Gaza began last October, pro-Iranian groups have repeatedly targeted US forces in Syria and Iraq in response to Washington's support for Israel.
In many cases, the US has responded to these attacks by carrying out attacks against groups supported by Tehran./ REL
