Omicron blast, Switzerland tightens antiCovid measures

Omicron blast, Switzerland tightens antiCovid measures

Switzerland announced tougher measures against COVID-19 on Friday, December 3rd, as the government is struggling to contain a wave of infections and the arrival of the Omicron variant in the country.

The state will extend the mask-wearing obligation and produce a certificate proving a person has been vaccinated or cured of the coronavirus, the government said.

The masks will have to be placed indoors, wherever the certificate is required, the government said in a statement.

On the other hand, various events and venues will be allowed to impose entry restrictions themselves by seeking evidence of vaccination or cure from the virus.

The measures also reiterate the message that people work from home, even though work from home has not become mandatory as local authorities and businesses opposed it.

The measures will take effect on Monday, December 6th and will be effective until January 24th.

"The Federal Council is currently assessing the situation as very critical. The introduction of the Omicron variant also presents new challenges for responding to the pandemic," the government said in a statement.

Three cases with the new variant have already been confirmed in Switzerland, according to the Federal Office of Public Health.

The state with 8.7 million inhabitants is fighting against an increase in the number of infections with more than 96 thousand cases confirmed in the last 14 days and a record number of deaths of 11,340 people on November 29./REL
