Suddenly left Afghanistan, former President Ghani apologizes to the people:

Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has apologized to the people of Afghanistan, "abandoned" them and left to take refuge in the United Arab Emirates.

"Leaving Kabul was the most difficult decision of my life," he said, adding that he regretted that "it could not have ended otherwise".

Ghani left Afghanistan abruptly as Taliban militants advanced into the capital on 15 August.

He said he had no intention of abandoning his people, but "that was the only way".

He also again denied "baseless" allegations that he had traveled to the UAE for about $ 169 million ($ 123 million).

In a statement shared on Twitter, Ghani said there was no choice but to leave the country in order to avoid widespread violence.

He said it had taken 20 years to help Afghanistan become a "democratic, prosperous and sovereign state".

Ghani added that there was "deep and profound regret that my chapter ended in tragedies similar to my predecessors".

The 72-year-old former president, who has faced harsh criticism from other Afghan politicians for leaving the country, said he would address "the events that led to my departure" in the near future.

Earlier this week, the Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in a sweeping offensive more than three weeks ago, announced the formation of an interim government of all men to rule the country.
