'Joe the Plumber', made famous during Obama's 2008 campaign, dies

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, known as "Joe the plumber", has passed away at the age of 49. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for a long time.

Samuel became famous 15 years ago when, during the 2008 US presidential election, he held a debate with the then Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, during the campaign in Toledo, Ohio.

Wurzelbacher asked Obama if he would pay more taxes if the Democrat won, and Obama, then a U.S. senator from Illinois, admitted he might.

"At first, I started asking him if he believed in the American dream and he said yes, he did — and then I went on to ask him, then, why is he penalizing me for trying to fulfill it," Wurzelbacher said at the time .

"Joe" went from working as a plumber in suburban Toledo, Ohio, to the life of a media sensation. Days later, Obama's Republican opponent, US Senator John McCain, repeatedly referred to "Joe the Plumber" in a presidential debate.

Wurzelbacher continued to campaign with Mçai and his running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, but he later criticized Mçai in his book and said he did not want her as the presidential candidate.
