DP MP Agron Gjekmarkaj has accused Bajram Begaj of violating the Constitution and of "capturing the presidential institution by the majority" after the decision to decree the holding of elections in the Municipality of Tirana.

In a public statement distributed on social media, Gjekmarkaj describes the decree as a "black page in the chronicle of state capture," accusing the President of abandoning his role as the guarantor of national unity.

"President Bajram Begaj today has chosen not to be a symbol of national unity, but a notary of the majority. Instead of guaranteeing the normal functioning of institutions, he has embraced the role of a selective interpreter of the Prime Minister's wishes," Gjekmarkaj writes.

According to him, the decreeing of elections in Tirana was made without a clear constitutional basis, plunging the process into a “constitutional labyrinth with no way out.” He describes the decision as a political act, dictated by fear and not by institutional reflection.

"Today's decree is not a product of institutional reflection, but a consequence of a party order received in an office that lacks the republican spirit," Gjekmarkaj continues.

In concluding the statement, he warns that this action will be remembered as a dark day for Albanian democracy.

"History will remember this day not for its justice, but for the brutal violation of every constitutional norm."
