Today marks 23 years since the assassination of the historical leader of the Democratic Party, Azem Hajdari. The latter was shot dead on September 12, 1998, a few meters from the PD headquarters. His bodyguard, Besim Cera from Dibra, also died from the bullets.

Jaho Mulosmani and three brothers, Izet, Ismet and Isamedin Haxhia, were charged with the murder of the former December leader.

In a marathon trial, Mulosmani, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the two brothers Izet and Ismet Haxhia, who were sentenced to 25 and 20 years in prison, respectively, were found guilty. The third of the Haxhia brothers, Isamedini, was convicted only of illegal possession of weapons.

Hajdari, the most ardent representative of the Albanian right, had led Tirana students to anti-communist demonstrations in 1990.

Azem Hajdari, "Hero of Democracy" holds the highest title of the Republic of Albania "Order of the Flag" and the highest order in the Republic of Kosovo, "High Medal of the Albanian League of Prizren", awarded by former President Ibrahim Rugova. Azem Hajdari is an Honorary Citizen of Tirana and almost all municipalities and communes of the Republic of Albania.
