"Benz" falls from the "long-standing throne in Albania; 41% of cars are older than 20 years

BENZ and Volkswagen brands are the most present on the roads of Albania. Benz was the first favorite after the 90's because of the ruggedness suitable for broken roads, then Volkswagen came to be preferred as an economy car, but in the meantime various other brands entered.

According to INSTAT, a total of 116,204 Mercedes Benz cars were circulating in the country, with 18.17% of the total number of cars. However, this brand seems to be falling from the "throne", as small and economical cars are becoming popular.

At the end of 2022 there were 115,064 Volkswagen cars, 18% of the total, fast approaching BENZ. Even other INSTAT data revealed that in the first quarter of this year, the "Volkswagen" brand is the brand with the highest circulation in the country in the category of new road vehicles with 20.4%, followed by the "Mercedez Benz" brand with 16.3%.

The third most preferred brand is DAIMLER CHRYSLER (10.4%) followed by Ford (9.6%), Opel (5.2%), Audi (5.8%), Fiat (3.9%); Toyota (4.6%), BMW (3.4%); Renault (3.4%).

The INSTAT data revealed that in 2022 there were a total of 639,379 cars in the country, which constituted 80.3% of the total number of vehicles in the country, totaling 796,438 vehicles with "active" and "temporarily deregistered" status). The rest consists of "Vehicles for mixed transport" (6.5%) and "Motor" (5.4%).

In 2022, the number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants is 232. In 2021, this indicator was 212 cars per 1,000 inhabitants.

41% of cars are older than 20 years

The fleet of vehicles operating in Albania remains very old and is being replaced at a slow pace. Nearly 41% of the vehicles circulating by the end of 2022 were older than 20 years. 51% were between 11-20 years old; 5.5% from 6 to 10 years and only 5 thousand cars, or 0.8% are new, with a production year of less than two years.

However, the number of old vehicles is falling. According to INSTAT, the number of cars registered in 2022, with a production year of 2011-2022 has increased by 27.1%, the 2000-2010 group has increased by 7.7%, while the group of cars with a production year before 2000 has decreased by 0.8%.

Autoveturat me kambio “Manuale” zënë pjesën më të madhe (60,8%) të autoveturave gjithsej që rezultojnë me status “aktiv” ose “të çrregjistruara përkohësisht” në vitin 2022.
