Village abandonment puts vineyards and orchards on the 'road'

The depopulation of villages and increasing emigration have pushed farmers to rent out their real estate, thus trying to put it into operation but also to receive income.

And it's not just about barren or unproductive land, but also about olive groves that generate a considerable amount of annual income if properly serviced, as well as vineyards that, in addition to direct product sales, are processed into wine, cider, and brandy.

Referring to the farmer's portal, where agricultural land for rent is listed throughout the country, it seems that olive groves and vineyards occupy a significant share.

Specifically, there are a total of 4,379 plots listed for rent, the majority of which are arable land, around 2,768 plots since for various reasons, including emigration, they have been left fallow and renting them out provides an opportunity to generate income for farmers wherever they are.

Meanwhile, there are 649 plots of orchards, 482 plots of vineyards and 412 olive groves of various sizes that are on the rental market. As for the olive groves, most of them are located in Berat, Fushë-Krujë, Durrës, Kuçovë, Përmet and Vlorë. While the majority of the vineyards are located in Berat, Kurbin, Lezhë, Përmet and Vlorë.

Recently, the olive has been considered one of the most profitable cultivars for farmers, given that the demand is oriented towards the domestic production of olive oil and also, the tourist boom has made this demand higher. On the other hand, the doors have also been opened for export, mainly to Italy. This year there seems to be a good production and currently the selling price of olive oil varies at 700 lek/liter.
