Facade economy / 679 call center and the dark financial corridor of Albania

From Alba Cape

According to data from OpenCorporates Albania, there are currently 679 companies operating call centers in Albania.

This figure is not an indicator of economic development but a serious structural anomaly that raises strong questions about the functioning of the market, the role of institutions, and Albania's positioning in relation to international crime.

In a small economy with limited consumption and without a consolidated service industry, such a high concentration of call centers is economically unjustifiable and cannot be considered a coincidence.

This phenomenon does not arise spontaneously and does not grow without institutional tolerance or clientelism.

It is hard to believe that hundreds of companies with the same activity, with large financial turnovers, mainly foreign clientele, and with unusual longevity despite scandals, can function without political support or indirect involvement of powerful individuals.

In any functional state, such a sector would be under constant control.

The fact that this has not happened for years is a serious indicator of a systemic problem.

According to the documented investigative case, a single call center can generate over 30 million euros per month.

Even if only a portion of these companies operate in gray or criminal areas, the monthly amounts leaving Albania are potentially hundreds of millions of euros, while on an annual basis they reach billions of euros.

These flows do not correspond to the real economy, are not proportionally reflected in taxes, and are not justified by domestic productivity.

Of course, not all call centers are involved in fraud. There are companies that offer real and legitimate services.

But the problem is not the existence of correct subjects.

The problem is the scale of the phenomenon.

When a country is perceived as a base of operations for international fraud, as an exit point for suspicious financial flows, and as a territory with weak institutional control, it is labeled.

This labeling not only damages the national image but also hinders foreign investment and positions Albania as a favorable territory for international crime.

679 call center companies are not a success of foreign investments in Albania.

On the contrary, they are a failure of control, political and institutional silence and protection, and a strategic risk for Albania.

Unless there are powerful names hidden behind them.
