The National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastra returns

The National Folk Festival will take place in the Gjirokastra fortress, from June 24 to July 1. For this return, Prime Minister Edi Rama shared on social networks a promotional video of the festival, in which folk artists from all over Albania are expected to perform.

Describing the return of the National Folklore Festival as a good news, the head of government pointed out that the Castle of Gjirokastra has been decorated and enlivened as if by magic with the colors, motifs, rhythms, songs and dances of all the Albanian provinces.

This festival returns after eight years in Gjirokastër, the last time was in 2015. In addition to the national and artistic values, folklore festivals have been linked to the life of the southern stone city and its inhabitants over the years. The first National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastra took place in 1968, in the surroundings of the stone castle, and since then, this festival has been held every five years.

The 70s can also be considered the peak of participation in this festival, where there were more than a thousand selected participants.

The Gjirokastra Festival was conceived in the form of a folklore competition where, until the 1988 edition, awards were given to the best groups, but in the most recent ones, the division of evaluations was conceived for the bearers and interpreters of folklore.

It is the most important event and the greatest legacy of Albanian culture. The main goal is the broad reflection of the genres of folklore, in addition to the protection and promotion of the best musical, choreographic, ethnographic values, created for centuries.
