Joe Biden is infected with Covid-19

US President Joe Biden was diagnosed with COVID-19 while on a campaign trip to Las Vegas on Wednesday and is experiencing mild symptoms, the White House said.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre announced the 81-year-old Democrat's diagnosis after the president of UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organization, said Mr. Biden would be unable to speak at a planned event because of infection with Covid-19. Instead of addressing Hispanic voters, President Biden went to Delaware, where he had planned to spend the weekend.

"He is vaccinated and experiencing mild symptoms,"  White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

President Biden's diagnosis coincides with the National Assembly of the Republican Party and calls by Democrats for his removal from the race for president.

The California lawmaker, Adam Shiff, who is running for the US Senate, was added today to the calls of 19 Democratic lawmakers for Mr. Biden's withdrawal from the race for president.

Concerns among Democrats about the 81-year-old incumbent's ability to defeat his Republican rival, or whether he is capable of leading the country for a second term, were heightened after Mr. Biden's poor performance in the first presidential debate on June 27.
