"Appeal" upholds the decision, life imprisonment for Laert Haxhiu

In the GJKKO Appeal, a hearing was held for Laert Haxhiu, who opposes the decision of the first instance for his sentence of life imprisonment.

Present in the hall were only the prosecutor Altin Dumani and the defense lawyer Detar Hysi, while the defendant Laert Haxhiu did not participate.

The lawyer said that his client is innocent, requesting the annulment of the decision of the first instance and sending the case for a retrial with another judicial body.

Prosecutor Dumani described the decision of life imprisonment from the first degree as fair and requested that it be kept in force.

Detar Hysi: I ask the court to evaluate our complaint objectively, making it possible to reveal the truth. We ask the court to change the decision of GJKKO to declare Laert Haxhiu guilty. We demand the declaration of innocence for Laert Haxhiu. We request the annulment of the decision of the first instance and the sending of the case to the same court with another judicial body.

Altin Dumani: The decision of the first instance is right and should remain in force. Both the evidence of the prosecution and the evidence presented by the defense have been addressed. As for the implementation of the law, we think it is a fair decision. Regarding the defendant's claim and his defense for reopening the judicial review, we believe that this court rightly rejected the request. The prosecution has referred to the film footage at the Gulf gas station, not the footage brought by Zamir Latif's father. There is no room to question the authenticity of the evidence. The witnesses called by the defense and the prosecution were also asked about the footage. The murder of Zamir Latif and Jurgen Hoxha had no motive, but it happened because Xuljo Skurti was the target, due to the conflict that Laert Haxhiu had with him. The defendant, repeatedly, in the first instance and here in the Appeal, has said that we are not in front of a criminal group. We clarify that the existence of a structured criminal group was proven. Between Laert Haxhi and Xjuljo Skurti there was a conflict that lasted for years.

We recall that Laert Haxhiu was sentenced by the Court of First Instance to life imprisonment, as he is accused of what is known as the "Lushnja massacre", which ended with the murder of Zamir Latif and Jurgen Hoxha, as well as the wounding of Marjus Xhepexhiu and Bujar Turks.
