Bajram Begaj is elected President of Albania, according to international media

The Assembly voted today with the majority of socialist votes, Bajram Begaj as the new President of the Republic of Albania. With 78 votes in favor, 4 against and one abstention, Begaj takes office on July 24.

Begaj's election at the helm of the Presidency has been echoed in foreign media. Reuters writes "The Albanian Parliament on Saturday voted the head of defense Bajram Begaj as the new president of the country, a mainly ceremonial position. With 78 votes in favor in the 140-seat parliament, Begaj will lead Albania's highest office for the next five years. He was elected in the fourth round of voting after the previous three rounds failed to reach a consensus.

The Associated Press also writes about the boycott by the Democrats, while emphasizing the lack of compromise between the parties.

"The ruling Left Socialist Party proposed and voted for Begaj, 55, as he did not reach a compromise with the opposition on a candidate to replace President Ilir Meta and no independent candidate was proposed. "The majority of the opposition boycotted the vote," reads the AP article.

Bajram Begaj has been elected the new President of the Republic of Albania. 83 deputies took part in the voting, out of which 78 voted for, 4 against and one abstained. DP leader Sali Berisha and Democrats appeared in the special session, but boycotted the voting process. While Enkelejd Alibeaj's group, with the exception of some deputies, did not appear at the session at all.
