Backlog files, the US embassy criticizes the Supreme Court: Albanians deserve swift justice
The American Embassy in Tirana requests that the Supreme Court do more work in resolving the backlog of cases.
In a post on Facebook, the US embassy writes that currently the court has only three vacancies with unfilled members. Of the 8,200 backlog cases it had in 2020, the Supreme Court has resolved 5,200 files.
The American Embassy, while being critical, demands more progress in the process, stressing that Albanians deserve swift justice.
"In 2019, the Supreme Court had a judge from 19 countries. Today there are 16 members and only three unfilled seats.
As of July 2020, the Supreme Court had a backlog of approximately 35,000 cases. As of April 2021, the US-funded case reduction project has processed more than 8,200 backlog cases – and the Supreme Court has ruled on 5,200 of them.
More needs to be done. The US will continue to support the Supreme Judicial Council as it fills remaining vacancies on the Supreme Court and will support major efforts to reduce the case backlog. Albanians deserve fast, real justice" , writes the US embassy.
