Over 2 million euros, thousands of dollars and pounds undeclared at the border

The cases of non-declaration of monetary values doubled in 2023 and so did the seized financial amounts, compared to the previous year. According to a report of the Albanian Customs, published on Tuesday, during the year 2023 there were 73 cases of non-declaration of monetary values at the border, of which 44 cases were in the entry and 29 cases in the exit of the Albanian state, out of 37 cases in 2022.

In 2023, according to the Albanian Customs, over 2 million euros, about 452 thousand pounds, about 166 thousand dollars and about 50 thousand Swiss francs were seized. Meanwhile, in 2022, about 1.3 million euros and about 165 thousand pounds were seized at the border points. The border crossing points where the most frequent cases of non-declaration of money are recorded are Durrësi, Rinasi, Kakavija and Morina. Reports from the Albanian police and the Italian police say that the Port of Durrës has served in quite a few cases for criminal groups operating abroad to bring large amounts of money into Albania through passenger bus drivers.

According to the report, "During 2023, the Anti-Trafficking Task Forces carried out 1,840 checks at various border customs branches, which resulted in the seizure of undeclared 'cash' money". The Albanian Customs says that in the framework of the prevention of money laundering and the financing of terrorism in the customs system, they sent 19 cases during 2023 to the Financial Intelligence Agency for further investigation based on indicators of suspicious activity. Since 2008, the Albanian law stipulates that all persons entering or leaving the territory of Albania are obliged to declare at the customs at the border the amount over 10 thousand euros or the same value in other currencies./VOA
