Study in Durrës/ Scoliosis in children up to 12 years old, 55% affected

The numbers of children in the age group of 10-12 years affected by scoliosis in 19 educational institutions of Durrës are worrying. After a study recently carried out in these schools, 55% of the examined children are affected by scoliosis, while 90% show postural problems.

"In Durrës, we built 19 schools. We visited 1471 children aged 12-14 years and from this number, 815 children have scoliosis, somewhere around 55%, which is a very large number, while more than 90% of children have postural problems", said physiotherapist Fation Daci. .

The division of cases in center-periphery ratios is surprising. According to the physiotherapist, children living in urban centers are more prone to being obese and suffering from spine problems.

"It came as a surprise to us and we were surprised, that it turns out that the closer to the center, to residential areas, where there is no place for children to play, the problems are much greater, postural problems and obesity. Among the children who were in schools near the coast, or in rural areas, the children were much straighter, much less obese, very active," he said.

Not engaging in physical activities, prolonged use of electronic devices and the weight of the school bag are the main "enemies" of minors.

"We have made a questionnaire, where we ask the children if they play sports during the weekends, how many times a week do they go out with their parents to play, do they hold the phone, how long do they spend in front of the phone and the answers are real and unfortunate. Because parents don't go out to play with their children in yards, on sports grounds, on picnics", said Faton Daci, physiotherapist.

In this case, the fault is not an orphan.

"The situation is definitely very problematic and both the parents and the institutions are to blame here. The first to notice is the parent. We get cases here, 15-year-olds with scoliosis over 30 degrees and their parents have not noticed, which is also absurd. Then there are the physical education teachers. But all this must be done by the institutions. It is the state that must take urgent measures. This is a global problem, but we are a little behind. The number of books should be reduced, or they should be made with two pairs of books", said Faton Daci, physiotherapist.

If these calls from the experts are not heard, we risk that in the future we will have a deformed youth from the first years of adolescence./Taken from Euronews Albania
