Tahiri leaves the Lushnja prison, accompanied to Tirana

The former Minister of the Interior, Saimir Tahiri, was released today from the cell by the decision of the Court of Elbasan.

Tahiri will serve the remainder of his sentence of 1 year and 8 months under house arrest. The State Police is escorting the former minister from Lushnja to Tirana.

His lawyer Maks Haxhia said that the former minister submitted two expert reports according to which Tahir's wife, who suffers from an illness, is unable to take care of the children. Therefore, it has been requested that Tahir's security measures be eased.

Tahiri was sentenced on February 4, 2022 to 5 years in prison for 'Abuse of duty', but with a shortened trial the sentence was reduced to 3 years and 4 months.

Tahiri was sentenced only for "Abuse of duty", after the charges of SPAK for "Corruption of high officials", "Trafficking of narcotic substances carried out in cooperation" and "Structured criminal group" were dismissed in GJKKO.
