The charges against Alec Baldwin for the shooting in the movie "Rust"

According to a new report, criminal charges filed against Alec Baldwin in the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of "Rust" will be dismissed. Recently appointed special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis are expected to file the documents soon, Deadline reported Thursday. By doing so, the pair will deny involuntary manslaughter charges. However, the charges against the defendant, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, have not yet been cleared, meaning the case – and Baldwin's involvement – could be reviewed in the future. Baldwin's attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, responded to the news saying:

"We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident."

The verdict comes just two weeks before a mini-trial was held in the murder of filmmaker Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins, 42, was fatally shot on the film's set when Baldwin's gun fired a live bullet, hitting him in the chest.

The film's director, Joel Souza, was also injured in the shooting, but no charges were filed in connection with his injuries. Baldwin, 64, has steadfastly denied ever pulling the trigger, pleading not guilty to manslaughter in February. However, prosecutors argued that "photos and videos clearly show Baldwin, multiple times, with his finger inside the trigger guard and on the trigger" before the fatal shots. Baldwin initially faced up to five years in prison, which was later dropped to just 18 months behind bars. Meanwhile, "Rust" will resume filming in Montana this week.
