The Land Rover Defender will be fully electric in the coming years

The Land Rover Defender will be fully electric within the next few years. The last version of the 4×4 was introduced in 2020, however it's likely we'll see fully electric versions of the 90, 110 and 130 arriving as part of a refreshed Defender range in 2025, with the cars to reach customers in 2026.

The move is likely to mean a switch in platform technology, from the current D7 Premium Lightëeight architecture to Land Rover's new advanced MLA Flex platform. The MLA platform can support fully electric as well as internal combustion engines and already underpins the firm's new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models, with all-electric versions of these cars due to hit the market from 2024.

The firm's engineers are delighted with the prospect of its iconic 4×4 going electric and the benefits this will bring to its off-road performance. Greater control of power delivery through software management is possible, along with advanced barrel roll vectoring. Technical details of the Defender EV's sister vehicle, the all-electric Range Rover expected to hit the market in 2024, have yet to be revealed, but some Land Rover insiders suggest that a battery of around 100kWh will easily fit inside the MLA platform. and the goal will be at least up to nearly 500 kilometers of all-electric driving.
