Albanian pensioners are the unhappiest of the other population groups
In relation to the younger groups of the population, Albanian pensioners are the unhappiest. The global happiness index ranked Albanian retirees in 100th place out of 143 countries in the world for 2024. In the general index, which includes all age groups, Albania took the 87th place out of 143 countries.
In the 60+ age group, Albania had a poor ranking, leaving behind only African countries.
Albanian pensioners are also unhappier compared to other age groups of the population, the young and the middle-aged (see the table below). The index showed that in 2023 Albanian pensioners had lower levels of happiness than in 2006.
The index showed that in all countries in Central and Eastern Europe those 60 and over are the least happy.
Research from the Global Happiness Package has shown that inequality of well-being has a greater effect on overall happiness than income inequality.
Inequality in the distribution of happiness reflects inequalities in access to well-being, including income, education, health care, social acceptance, supportive social environments in the family, etc.
At the age of over 60, the consequences of lack of well-being and health problems are greater. Countries with strong health and social protection systems have a higher level of happiness for the over-60 age group.
On the other hand, a series of researches and studies suggest that, as people age, they generally place more importance on the positive aspects of life. This explains why life estimates increase with age. But if the third age faces acute problems, such as poor health and insufficient income, it prevents them from perceiving the positive things in life.
Albanian pensioners currently live in poverty due to low incomes, which are below the relative poverty level of USD 6.7 per day.
In Albania, people over 49 years old are unhappier than 15 years ago. In total, Albanians were the unhappiest in Europe after the Turks in 2024./ Monitor
