Will Smith said he "lost it" when he punched comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars in his first interview since the infamous slap earlier this year.

"I lost it," Smith said on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah." "This was anger that had been building up for a really long time," he added. The actor told Noah that he was "going through something" and lost control that night.

"It was a terrible night as you can imagine," Smith said. " There are a lot of nuances and complexities to it, you know, but at the end of the day, I just - I lost control, and what I mean is you never know what a person is really going through.

Smith didn't reveal what problems he was dealing with during the awards ceremony - but said a lot of what he had experienced came to mind immediately. However, he was realistic, stating that none of them justified his actions.

"There were many things. It was the little boy who saw his father beating his mother (referring to the violence his father has inflicted on the actor's mother). All this appeared in my head at that moment," he said. " This is not who I want to be."

Noah also spoke his mind on the matter, defending Smith, whom he has known for years. " I also think it doesn't show who you really are," he said. "I think it doesn't show who you are. Everyone can make mistakes."

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star slapped Rock after he made a joke about his wife, Jada, while presenting an award on stage. Will also revealed how he has largely stayed out of the limelight since the famous slap, joking "I've been away, what have you been up to?".  Smith, who joined the show to promote his new film Emancipation, was moved to tears several times, including when he shared a heartfelt story about how his night after the Oscars ended. Smith said he saw his 9-year-old grandson after he returned home. " He is the sweetest little boy. We came home and he had stayed up late to see his uncle. We sat in my kitchen and he was on my lap and asked "Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?" said Smith, tearing up.

Smith added that he understands how people were shocked by his violent act and that he is now trying to heal and forgive himself.
