Who is Gabriel Escobar, will be the US envoy for the Western Balkans

The US Deputy Chief of Mission in Serbia, Gabriel Escobar, is expected to take over as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State on 7 September.

The news was confirmed by the Serbian embassy in Belgrade, but also by Escobar himself.

He also takes over as US State Department Special Representative for the Western Balkans, held so far by Matthew Palmer.

 " Yes, it is true, from September 7 I will start exercising this task," Escobar told the Serbian news agency Tanjug.

One of the main tasks of Escobar as the Special Representative of the US Department of State for the Western Balkans will be the dialogue process for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

Gabriel Escobar is a career diplomat. He is considered a good connoisseur of the Western Balkans. From 1998 to 2001 he was part of US diplomatic missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia.

Escobar was appointed US Deputy Chief of Mission in Serbia in August 2019. Until the appointment of Ambassador Anthony Godfrey, he was in charge of the US Embassy in Belgrade.
