The increase in the price of tomatoes in Albania surprises even foreign media

The price of tomatoes in Albania has increased significantly, attracting the attention of international media. According to reports , in the Albanian market, the retail price of standard tomatoes has reached $3.70 to $4.65 per kilogram, while cherry tomatoes are sold for up to $8.40 per kilogram.

At the beginning of the season, in January, domestic tomatoes were selling for around $1.80 per kilogram, while imported products ranged from $2.90 to $3.20 per kilogram. Meanwhile, in early April, greenhouse production had brought lower prices, but the situation has changed, accompanied by continued growth.

According to data, at the wholesale level, farm prices range from $1.80 to $2.90 per kilogram, while in the main wholesale markets in Tirana they exceed $2.70 and in Korça they reach up to $3.20 per kilogram.

INSTAT reports show that February 2026 recorded the highest level of tomato prices in the last four years.

The price increase is linked to a number of factors, including reduced planted areas, flood damage earlier in the year, and high export demand. At the same time, weather conditions in the Mediterranean region have affected production, also affecting countries such as Italy, Spain and Turkey.

In Albania, agricultural areas in Fier, Lushnje and Berat have been hit by floods several times, causing losses in greenhouse production and increasing costs. Increased plant diseases, rising prices of agricultural inputs and labor shortages have further increased pressure on production.

As a result, some producers have reduced activity, while available quantities are being directed towards export markets, limiting supply to the domestic market.
