The Supreme Court rejects Safet Gjici's appeal

The High Court has rejected the appeal filed by the former mayor of Kukës, Safet Gjici, upholding the decision of the Special Appeals Court that sentenced him to 3 years in prison.

Gjici had requested the annulment of the Appeals Court decision of June 24, 2024 and his acquittal for the criminal offenses of "abuse of office" and "passive corruption".

Initially, he was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for the sexual affair that occurred in the premises of the Kukes Municipality with Alma Kaçi. However, due to the summary trial, Gjici received a reduction in sentence to 3 years.

Alma Kaçi was also sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison for the criminal offense of "active corruption".

Currently, Safet Gjici is serving the remaining 8 months of his sentence under "house arrest", after being released from prison on May 19, 2025 due to health problems.
