The World Drug Report for 2022 from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime shows that Albania is the 7th country in the world for the production and distribution of cannabis in the world.
The report examines the state of drug cultivation in countries around the world.
Out of 154 countries, Albania ranks 7th after Morocco, Afghanistan, Spain, the Netherlands, Pakistan and Lebanon.
Albania managed to surpass Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Nepal and India, which completed the list of 11 main countries for the cultivation and distribution of cannabis out of 154 countries.
Albania also ranked first in the South East Europe region, suggesting that there is a significant trade in cannabis cultivation which is either exported or used internally. After Albania came Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria.
Our country has also been mentioned for the so-called Balkan road for heroin trafficking, which starts in Pakistan and passes through Syria, Turkey, Greece and Albania before continuing to the countries of Western Europe.
According to the UN report, the legalization of cannabis in some countries has contributed to the increase of users of this drug, although it is often claimed that legalization has the opposite effect.
