Aruba, 'Bershani's fairy tale' or the hidden truth? Why are government media worried

The statements that the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, made during a conference with journalists where he presented several accusations against Prime Minister Edi Rama and his government, mentioning a meeting in 2019 on the Dutch island of Aruba, which he links to drug traffickers and groups declared as terrorist organizations by international agencies, have "worried" the government media.

Berisha stated that there are intercepts of specialized international agencies that confirm the participation of several Albanian government ministers in this meeting, which, according to him, had as its objective the discussion of issues related to drug trafficking and development projects in Tirana.

The accusations are based on revelations included in a book recently published in Italy, authored by Italian journalist Nello Trocchi, who writes that in Aruba there was a meeting of senior Albanian officials with drug trafficking leaders with global connections. 

And today, when the senior political figures who have supported these media outlets are "eating their heads" among the ruling cabinet, and especially when the mayor, Lali Eri, has been brought to justice by the leader of the majority, Edi Rama, these media outlets have begun to worry about the 'mistakes' that the opposition is making.

Pro-government media criticize Berisha as the inventor of "political balloons", emphasizing that the Italian file called "Enigma" has been archived by the Florence Prosecutor's Office.

The attacks continued today as a court session was held in the Tirana Court between Erion Veliaj and an Italian businessman named Gabriele Tarroni Longinotti.

"Veliaj has sued the Italian citizen in court after two years ago he was used by the Berisha family television to make statements against payments promised to him, illustrating scenarios ready to be recited. He has done this twice: once on the show "Piranjat" and once for a journalist from "Syri", who interviewed him in Dubai.

Today before the court, the Italian citizen has filed a notarial statement where he not only claims that he has never met Veliaj, but also admits that he made all the statements in exchange for promises of payment from Shkëlzen Berisha's "Syri TV".

Por “beteja e këtyre mediave për të mbrojtur Veliajn dhe për të sulmuar opozitën nuk ndalet. Një tjetër televizion i ka dedikuar një shkrim teksa të gjithë akuzat e Berishës, bazuar tek libri i publikuar nga gazetari italian e quan “përralla berishiane”.

“Prej ditësh, opozita po e fryn si tullumbace ekzistencën e një samiti të supozuar mes kriminelësh në vitin 2019 në ishullin holandez të Arubës, ku sipas saj, kanë marrë pjesë edhe përfaqësues (anonimë) të qeverisë Rama. Akuzat bazohen në zbulimet e përfshira në një libër të sapobotuar në Itali, me autor gazetarin italian Nello Trocchia, libër që shumica e analistëve që flasin për të, në fakt nuk e kanë lexuar kurrë. Por ne po, e kemi lexuar.

Nëse do ta kishin lexuar, do t’u duhej të përmendnin të paktën dy elementë thelbësorë që rrëzojnë përrallën berishiane. Elementi i parë është se vetë gazetari shkruan se takimi misterioz në Aruba përmendet në një dosje të quajtur “Enigma”, e hapur nga Prokuroria e Firences në vitin 2018 por që më pas, siç pranon vetë autori, është arkivuar. Dhe këtë e përsërit dy herë, për të shmangur çdo keqkuptim (faqe 233 dhe 240). Pra, as autoritetet italiane nuk i kanë dhënë peshë ekzistencës së atij takimi, e aq më pak mundësisë që ai të përbëjë provë për ndonjë vepër penale. Ndaj, dosja është arkivuar.”

Mirëpo pas 2 vitesh Longinoti paska ndërruar version, duke pohuar para gjykatës që gjithcka ka thënë kanë qenë gënjeshtra dhe se për këtë i është ofruar para.

Por meqenëse personi në fjalë nuk qenka i bindur dhe është i lëkundshëm nga deklaratat që i bën me vetëdijen e plotë, a mund të themi sot se italianit i është ofruar “ kompromis” për të ndryshuar version?

“Ne jemi të gatshëm të përballemi, jo vetëm me Longinotin, por edhe me ata që e kanë takuar këto ditë për të marrë atë që iu duhej.

Sa për hallin e mediave të mbetura besnike të Veliajt, halli i tyre nuk është as problemi jonë e as i publikut. Lali i tyre do të qëndrojë aty ku është, pavarësisht çdo përpëlitjeje publike.

In this network of manipulation, even high-ranking figures like Belinda Balluku have served as a political shield, claiming in the Assembly that no MP has been to Aruba, while protecting the Prime Minister and Veliaj from any political or legal responsibility.

Balluku, who in her speech from the Assembly stated that none of the MPs present had been to a meeting in Aruba.

According to Berisha, Balluku only swore before all his colleagues who were there in parliament that they had not been to Aruba, but he betrayed Rama and two others who were missing.

In this context, the battle to tell the truth about the Aruba meeting, drug trafficking connections, and dubious investments remains a critical front for the opposition, while pro-government media continue to defend Veliaj and minimize any political damage to Rama.
