EU paves the way, Montenegro on the verge of membership

Montenegro's candidacy for the European Union moves one step closer to its realization, as Brussels formed a special working group to prepare the legal details of the accession treaty.

The Ad Hoc Group, composed of representatives from EU countries, will follow step by step the process that could bring Podgorica into the bloc.

“This is a clear signal that EU membership remains within reach,” said a spokesman for the Cypriot presidency.

Montenegro has already closed 14 of the 33 chapters that need to be finalized before becoming a full member, while the rule of law remains the main challenge.

President Jakov Milatović, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, emphasized the importance of regional stability and efforts for credible integration into the EU and NATO.

Montenegro, with around 600,000 inhabitants, aims to become a member by 2028, turning the process into a test for the European bloc's enlargement policies.
