11 suitcases with 178 kg of gold, what King Zog took when he left Albania

Historian Artan Lame has made public new details on the history of the gold that King Zog took from Albania upon his departure on April 6-7, 1939, when Italy had admitted that it would attack Albania if King Zog did not accept the right to gave Italy many accesses to power.

According to the documents in the State Archive, quoted in "Opinion" it is about 178 kilograms of gold, which is calculated at today's exchange rate to 5 million and 936,757 Euros.

"In the king's motorcade, there were also 11 suitcases with nearly 178 kg of gold that he had received by decision of the Council of Ministers on the evening of April 6, 1939. The story of the gold that Zogu took with him has always been the subject of debate. The documents of the State Archive clarify that on April 6, 1939 at around 21:00, the King ordered the Minister of Finance, Kol Thaçi, that the entire state of the State Treasury should be presented to him. In fact, Albania's gold was mainly stored in the Banka di Napoli (2454 kg of gold) and only a small amount of gold (about 178 kg) was found in the vault of the Bank of Albania. The General Treasurer, Ramadan Berberolli, according to the government's orders, delivered to the King the sum of 448,535 gold coins in the house of Koço Kota and about 118,195 coins,

Zogu held government meetings there. According to the documents, King Zog withdrew a total of 566,975.5 gold francs. Almost all that was available to the Albanian Treasury. Based on the calculation that one Napoleon Florin consisted of 20 gold francs, the King had taken with him an amount of 27,848 gold Napoleons. Calculated with today's gold exchange rate (the rate of September 10, 2014), it turns out that King Zog had taken with him an amount equal today to 5 million and 936,757 Euros.

In his memoirs, the King clarifies that the main part was distributed under the auspices of a commission of 7 people for officials from Larisa, Follorina and Belgrade. But no one can say today what the amount of gold may have been that the King personally possessed and kept in his vault in the Palace, as well as jewels and other valuables" , said Lame.
