Christian Schmidt resigns as High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, has resigned from his post after almost five years at the helm of the Office of the High Representative, N1 Sarajevo has confirmed, EWB writes .

The German diplomat has already informed the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) of his decision and has requested the initiation of the procedure for selecting a new successor.

Schmidt will continue to perform all of his normal duties in full capacity until the process of appointing a successor is completed.

Currently, Christian Schmidt is in New York, where he is presenting his annual report to the UN Security Council.

According to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the United States has been pressuring Schmidt, whom Republika Srpska does not recognize as High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, for months, with Washington reportedly seeking to appoint a successor who is “easier to manage.”
