Nobel Peace Prize winner in critical condition, imprisoned in Iran

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate imprisoned in Iran on charges of anti-government propaganda has suffered a "catastrophic deterioration" in her health, her foundation said.

Narges Mohammadi, a lawyer who campaigned for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty, has been transferred from a prison in Zanjan to a hospital in northwestern Iran.

She lost consciousness twice and suffered a severe heart attack "after 140 days of systematic medical neglect," according to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation.

The foundation said she remained in an unstable condition, receiving oxygen.

She was arrested in December after reporting the death of a human rights lawyer, Khosrow Alikordi, who was found in his office in what some called suspicious circumstances.

At the time, the International Bar Association said his death "reflects a broader pattern of prosecution, intimidation, imprisonment and killing of lawyers in Iran."

Mohammadi was sentenced to 7 years and six months in prison in February.
