The publication of this photo comes in the context of the 17th anniversary of the March 2004 riots.

The riots started after two Albanian children in the northern part of Mitrovica drowned in the Ibar River. Some children, who survived, in the late hours of that night, showed in front of the cameras that they had been chased by Serbs and that they had managed to escape, when some of their friends drowned in the river.

The next day (March 17, 2004), protests began in many cities in Kosovo, which soon escalated into violence. During these riots, several Serbian houses and churches were burned, something similar happened to Albanian houses in the Serb-majority parts.

As a result, 19 people, 12 of them Albanians, lost their lives during these riots.

Although Eide in this report concluded that many things have improved in Kosovo since 1999 and recommended that the time has come to start talks on Kosovo's final status.

A few days later, Kofi Annan makes the same recommendation to the UN Security Council. Whereas on February 17, 2008, based on this proposal, Kosovo was declared an independent and sovereign state. The Constitution of Kosovo, which gives it all the competencies of the state, entered into force on June 15, 2008.
