Integration in the EU/ Euractiv: Albania and North Macedonia part ways

On October 15, the first chapters of negotiations for membership in the European Union will be officially opened.

"Albania's road to the EU was cut off from North Macedonia, while Skopje remains in oblivion", writes Euractiv.

This unanimous decision was taken on Wednesday (September 25) by all the ambassadors of the member countries of the European Union, an EU official told Euractiv.

"The path of the two Western Balkan countries towards EU membership was accompanied by the start of negotiations officially launched in the summer of 2022. However, due to disagreements between Skopje and Bulgaria, the actual opening of the chapters has been postponed indefinitely, directly affecting in the progress of Tirana", the article says.

But now, the next step is expected to be taken by Albania in mid-October within the framework of the intergovernmental conference and the opening of the first group of chapters.

This group includes several chapters – Procurement, Statistics, Judiciary and fundamental rights, justice, freedom and security and financial control.

"This is good news for Albania in its efforts to meet the requirements to advance on its path to the EU, but it is a setback for North Macedonia, which once again fails to take a decisive step towards EU membership. EU", writes Euractiv .
